(Afrikaans onder)

During July there has been a reduction in the number of burglaries reported to SAPS. There however was a concentration of incidents in Jocks Bay and Stony Point. The SAPS have reported that they arrested one of the main culprits involved in burglaries in our town and the trends for the first week in August shows a further reduction.

During the past month we continued with patrols and found ourselves confronting poachers and required the assistance of SAPS, DAFF and Cape Nature. One of our patrol team had a narrow escape when a large truck suddenly turned into Disa road and nearly collided with them while they were stationary on the corner.

We continue to observe tell-tale signs that residents provide to would be burglars that there is no one at home. These include:

  • Leaving household rubbish on the street on non-collection day. Residents are urged to take rubbish to the drop off point at the municipal offices.
  • Having alarm systems lights flashing for extended periods. Residents are urged to check their alarms regularly to avoid false alarms when they are away. Take responsibility for your alarm systems and demand a good service from your security company.

We need to acknowledge that Jorika Rabie has resigned from her position of Operational Coordinator and thank her for her contribution. The position will be filled at our next AGM and in the interim Rudi Perold will assist with these duties.

The following paragraphs were provided by one of our Wardens:

"A big thanks to Koot and Jenny of Bettys Bay who helped identify a suspect by their actions and also to Paul who saw the same suspect the next morning.

On the 2nd Aug a man appeared at the home in Cove Str Bettys Bay and the owner Koot Bierman took a photo of him on his balcony. He said that he was looking for food just after 20h00. The photo was sent out on whatsapp.

Paul Pais saw him in a driveway in Dolphin Rd the next morning and he turned around and left quickly. Paul recognised the clothing and looked at the photo he had received and saw it was the same person. BBNHW was contacted and soon found him on the corner of Dolphin and Oyster Str. The man said he had never been in BB before and was just looking for food. He was then shown a photo of himself and then forgot he was in BB the night before. SAPS, Cape Nature and DAFF were called. DAFF looked through his back pack and found a wet suit, perlemoen bag, big screw driver and a hand-made steel tool. Paul immediately recognised the marking on the tools and sizes then compared it with photos he took of a break in on Sea view Drive on the 1st Aug at about 19h00. He was taken to police station by Cape Nature as SAPS were attending to issues elsewhere. He was released as there was not enough evidence to detain him."

This is a good example of how we can assist in reducing crime in our area. If you report anything, please give as much info as possible, e.g info about the person, clothing and colours, if a vehicle the colour and make, registration number, time and place. The more quality info provided will improve our chances of finding a suspect. Please send info asap and don’t wait for hours to pass before you report it. We will have more positive results with reporting like this.

I need to thank all of our people who worked during the past months in the operations we conducted. Those working during our operations are giving of their time and use their own vehicles with no compensation; your dedication is much appreciated. In addition all those who have made donations are thanked for their generosity.

Any persons willing to help us are asked to send their details including names, telephone numbers and address to our e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Donations towards funding the camera system and our operating costs will be greatly appreciated.

Our banking details are always on the top of the category (here).

Residents should carefully consider the merits of a message on our whattsapp groups, especially in the middle of the night. Rather than wake up 250 people please consider phoning our 24/7 emergency phone 072 0155729 if there is an emergency.

Wishing you all a safe month.

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Buurtwag Groete
